The nursery phone,
set up right.
Ten minutes now saves the 3am “why did it disconnect”. Say what the phone by the crib runs, then tick things off as you go. Your ticks are saved on this device.
Before the first night.
Everything the phone by the crib needs so the monitor runs till morning. Most of it is one settings screen each.
Using an old phone as the monitor.
Yes. Any spare phone on Android 7 or iOS 16 and up will do: a Pixel 3 or an iPhone 8 is plenty. The nursery phone doesn’t need to be fast, only to have a working camera, microphone and charger. It becomes the camera by the crib; the phone you carry shows the picture.
Baby’s Day In is on the App Store and Google Play now.
The one you can leave behind. It’s the camera, so it lives on its charger in the nursery all night, and the phone you carry does the watching. If one of the two has a clearly better camera, that’s the one for the crib.
Wi-Fi or mobile data, either works, and the two phones don’t need to share a network. What matters is a steady signal at the crib: if the Wi-Fi is weak in the nursery, an extender or mobile data is more reliable than a faint bar.
Keep it on a stable surface at least a metre from the crib, out of reach, with the cable tucked away, and never inside the cot. Turn the brightness right down: the camera doesn’t need a bright screen, and a dim phone runs cooler. If it ever feels hot, move it out of direct sun and off soft fabric.
When the screen locks, the phone starts putting apps to sleep, and the camera is the first thing to go. Set the screen timeout to its longest (Never, where your phone offers it), keep Baby’s Day In open, and let it run unrestricted in the background. Those are the first three ticks above.
Best not. It’s the camera: switching to another app or taking a call on it pauses the picture until you come back. Keep it in the app, and let your own phone do everything else.

All ticked? Sleep well.
